Japan Surrenders!

...and the rest of the world shivered.

On this day, 60 years ago Japan surrendered and the cold war began. Was it worth it? Any answer to that question really make any more sense out of the situation. All I know is that this is the way the world is now, we can't go back and wouldn't want to at this point. If the atomic blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki didn't happen, but the cold war still did, would we have been instilled with enough fear of mutual annihilation to keep us from that fate? I'm not so sure either way.
